Ann’s Obituary Ann Marie Hajda Mikulencak, 98, was called home by the Lord on February 10, 2018. She was born April 8, 1920, to Frank & Annie Hajda in Granger, Texas. She was the second of seven children and attended St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic School through the 8th grade, when she dropped out to help her father in the cotton fields.
In 1939 at the age of 19, she married Albert Frank Mikulencak, Sr., a local merchant’s son with an entrepreneurial spirit. With a desire to own his own store, they moved to Elgin in 1941 where he and Ann spent 38 years working side by side in their variety stores. They were blessed with six children and were married 62 years until Albert passed in 2001.
Albert and Ann loved to travel and visited all 50 U.S. states and 105 countries on six different continents. Devoted and generous Catholics, the couple served in many capacities and donated property for their home parish Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elgin. They were invested into the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, the highest papal award which can be conferred on clergy and laity alike.
Ann was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother. She loved spending time with her family and will be greatly missed by each of them. She was an excellent cook and made sure that when family came to visit, she had fresh, homemade kolaches waiting for them.
Ann was never one to be idle and loved sewing, quilting, crocheting and gardening. Even up until her death, her mind was sharp, and her wit was infectious. She left a legacy of strength, faith, love and humor.
Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Mikulencak, Sr.; parents, Frank and Annie Hajda; son, Albert Mikulencak, Jr.; premature infant twins Ann and Daniel Mikulencak; daughter, Barbara Garrett; son-in-law Mike Montz, and brothers Tim Hajda, Frankie Hajda and Rudy Hajda. She is survived by her children, Dorothy Montz; Alice Pawelek and husband, Jerry; daughter-in-law Vera Mikulencak; son-in-law John Garrett, Jr.; 13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ann lived at the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Facility in Taylor for 9 years before moving to the S.P.J.S.T. Nursing Home Facility, where she was given excellent care by both facilities.
The family would especially like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff at the S.P.J.S.T. Nursing Home and Austin Hospice for their compassionate and loving care for their mother. Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Albert, Duane and Paul Mikulencak, David & Daniel Montz and John Garrett III. Visitation will be held Friday, February 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Providence-Jones Funeral Home, 604 Highway 95 North, Elgin, Texas.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 16 at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 302 W. 11th St., Elgin, Texas, followed by graveside burial at the Elgin Cemetery. The family invites everyone to join them for a celebration of her life at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church hall immediately following the burial. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 302 W. 11th St., Elgin, Texas, or the charity of your choice.
