Obituary Anthony James “Tony” Mazzone, 84, of Weirton passed away Saturday morning, May 18, at his home following a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. Tony was born October 4, 1934, in Follansbee, WV to the late Josephine (Tamburello) and Sam Mazzone, who immigrated to the United States from Palermo, Sicily and Ciro, Italy. He attended St. Anthony’s School, was a 1953 graduate of Follansbee High School, where his athletic abilities earned him multiple offers to play college football, and attended two years at Steubenville Business School; however, ever a faithful servant in support of his family, he instead accepted a position with Weirton Steel, where he worked in the central machine shop for the next 39 years until his retirement in 1992.

Tony was a Veteran who served two years in the 10th Infantry Mountain Division of the US Army. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Weirton for 55 years, serving 40 years as a Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion, four years as School Advisory Board member with two as president, and a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, serving two years as faithful navigator and holding the Bocci Ball Champion title for many years.

He was married to Mary Margaret (Confalone) Mazzone for 60 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, John (Lori) Mazzone of Newark, Ohio, and James (Roxanne) Mazzone of Weirton, seven grandchildren: Nicholas, Jessica, Maria, Jimmy, Gabrielle, and Mitchell Mazzone and Christine (Stephen) Travis, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings: James Cicchirillo, Rose Cicchirillo, Esther “Ang” Ball, Philomena Mazzone, Joseph Mazzone and another brother who died in infancy.

The family thanks the many employees of Valley Hospice for their loving assistance in his final weeks. Friends may call on Tuesday, May 21, from 4-8 p.m. at Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton; the Knights of Columbus will lead a rosary at 7:45 p.m. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 140 Walnut Street, Weirton, with the K of C Fourth Degree Assembly standing in honor; entombment with military honors follows at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery, Weirton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to St. Paul Catholic Church.

An ordinary man with extraordinary grace, Tony will be deeply missed and joyfully remembered as a true patriarch of our family. He will live forever in our hearts. Share tributes at www.
