Obituary for Arlene Samuelson Arlene M. (Donat) Samuelson (1922 – 2018) Arlene M. (Donat) Samuelson, 96, died at Stanard Assisted Living, Western Home Communities, Thursday, October 4, 2018. She was born May 9, 1922, in Maynard, Iowa, daughter of Marion and Ruth (Dawson) Donat. She married Thomas Samuelson on June 17, 1944.

Arlene graduated from Sumner High School in 1939, and completed Normal Training to begin her teaching career. In 1960, she completed her B.A. degree at Upper Iowa College. She continued her education throughout her long elementary teaching career at West Central with many summer classes and workshops to learn more about teaching.

Arlene’s influence led her family to explore the U.S. with camping trips, to be voracious readers, and to savor cooking and baking. She was known for her award-winning breads, including several original recipes. Granddaughter Adrianne enjoyed many hours doing craft projects with Grandma Arlene.

Arlene was also committed to helping others through many church and community volunteer activities. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Libke of Sumner; granddaughter Adrianne (Ryan) Kuchta, and great-grandchildren Norah and Grant of Combined Locks, WI. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Stanley, Gale, and Eugene; son Kirby; and son-in-law Darrell.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 8th at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls, with burial at Union Sumner United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Falls, or to the Western Home Communities.
