OBITUARY Arleta “Artie” Cromwell August 27, 1932 – January 4, 2019 Arleta (Artie) Cromwell, age 86, passed from this life into the next in Colorado Springs on January 4, 2019. Artie was born on August 27, 1932, the daughter of Matt and Arley (Pearson) Wurdinger, and spent the early years of her life in Hugo, Colorado before her family moved to Colorado Springs in the late 1930’s. She married Clayton (Lee) Cromwell on October 10, 1956 and they remained married until Lee’s death in 2012.

Family was always a priority and together they raised five children (Richard, Steve, Sandy, Marvin and Bret) in addition to providing foster care for two nieces and a nephew for three years. Artie cherished spending time with her children and her twenty-one grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Our large, extended family reunions held across the country were something she looked forward to and did not miss during the past 35 years.

While lovingly raising her wonderful family, Artie was also a long-time employee of Empire Gas Company where she was the Office Manager. While in high school Artie took a class in bowling which transpired into a passionate hobby that she would enjoy (and excel at) for the next sixty-eight years. Artie was very active in the bowling community in Colorado Springs for decades, coaching youth leagues for many years and holding several officer positions within the local bowling association and continuing to bowl in multiple leagues each year through the 2017-2018 season.

She was recognized for meritorious service and inducted into Colorado Springs Bowling Hall of Fame in 1987. She will be warmly remembered for her positive and compassionate nature, her strength and independence, along with her sense of humor and quick smile. She will be missed greatly.

Besides all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, Artie is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Gerry Wurdinger of Syracuse, New York and their family. Visitation will be from 5pm to 7pm, Friday, January 18th at Memorial Gardens. A funeral service will be held 1:00pm on Saturday, January 19th at Memorial Gardens, 3825 Airport Road, Colorado Springs.

Reception will follow. To support the sport she loved so much, Artie specifically requested that in lieu of flowers contributions be made in her name to the Pikes Peak Bowling Association (send check to: PPUSBC, 2913 N Murray Blvd, Colorado Springs, CO 80917).
