East Lyme- Austyn Michael Salafia, 18, passed away peacefully Friday February 15, 2019 at Yale New Haven Hospital surrounded with love and embraced by his family. Austyn was born February 14, 2001 at Middle Memorial Hospital in Middletown, CT to Michael and Laura Salafia. He aspired to be an innovator and was excited to participate in the Invention Convention.

He was homecoming king and was the first graduate of his class of 2019 from East Lyme High School. He had a deep passion for the ocean and was a valued Crew member on the Black Hawk. Some of his favorite memories were of his times fishing off of Montauk and spending days on his boat.

Family and boating were his passion. He loved playing basketball, and was admired for his competitive sports nature. He loved the Patriots and Kyrie Irving of the Boston Celtics, who inspired him and who he had the great pleasure of meeting.

Austyn will always be remembered for his beautiful smile and huge heart. Austyn is survived by his parents Michael and Laura Salafia, his siblings Amber De Souza and her spouse Renan De Souza, Adam Salafia and his partner Samantha Vega and Ashlyn Salafia and her partner Eddie Santiago, also his Nephews and niece Caleb and Gabriel De Souza, Jaxon Salafia, and McKenna Santiago. Calling hours will be Thursday, February 21st from 4:00-7:30pm at Thomas L. Neilan East Lyme Funeral Home 48 Grand Street Niantic.

A celebration of life will immediately follow. Austyn’s family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all those who have supported them through this tremendous journey. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Austyn’s Army.
