Currie December 07, 1940 – January 06, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Sympathy Card Barbara Frances Currie, a resident of Reading for 37 years, died January 6, 2019 at the Wingate at Reading Nursing Home. She was 78 years of age. Barbara was born in Everett, Massachusetts on December 7, 1940 the daughter of John L. and Mildred (Helein) Currie.

Barbara attended the Boston Music Conservatory for two years then transferred to Jackson College, now Tufts University, to complete her Bachelor Degree. After college she joined the USO and spent two years in Germany. After the USO she returned to Tuft’s University to get her Master’s Degree in Education.

Barbara was an English teacher at Belmont High School where she taught for over 30 years. She was president of the Belmont Teacher’s Association and a member of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Teachers’ Association. She also represented Massachusetts on the Board of Directors of the National Education Association.

After retirement, she served on the MTA Retired Members Committee. Barbara was an avid reader and loved her dogs. Barbara was the cherished sister of Roger Currie and his wife Judy of Reading.

Loving aunt of Stephen Currie of Milford, NH and Elizabeth and Matthew Currie of Lexington SC. She was the loving great aunt of 4 grandnieces and 1 grandnephew. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at the Douglass, Edgerley and Bessom Funeral Home 25 Sanborn St. (corner of Woburn St.), Reading at 11:00AM.

A visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00AM-11:00AM. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Barbara’s memory to MSPCA 350 S. Huntington Ave.
