Thursday, October 25, 2018, Barbara Nugent longtime resident of Guilford passed away peacefully at Branford Hospice surrounded by her family. Beloved wife of 50 years to Joseph Nugent. Barbara was born August 21, 1944 in Wimbledon, England daughter of the late Thomas and Frances Williams.
Barbara attended private school in Cornwall, England and emigrated to the U.S.A in 1960. Barbara had many dear friends especially Richard and Nancy Wardell.
Barbara worked for SNET Company for 30 years before retiring at 1st level supervisor. She also worked in a part time capacity for 12 years at Guilford Internal Medicine. Barbara was a loving caring person and she devoted many volunteer hours at Connecticut Hospice, Branford for 27 years as receptionist and also as flower arranger there through the Guilford Garden Club.
She was a 20 plus year member of the Guilford Garden Club serving on the Board in many capacities including Treasurer. Barbara was a tireless volunteer and instrumental in the Garden Club’s Tree Fund Committee which is responsible for numerous tree plantings around Guilford. She also served as Treasurer for the Whitfield South Neighborhood Association.
She never tired of volunteering and serving the community in many ways. Barbara was a Member of the Menunkatuck Audubon Society, Connecticut Audubon and volunteer for the Friends of the Guilford Library. Barbara and Joe enjoyed travel and made many trips to Europe and New Zealand.
She had a passion and love for wildlife and fulfilled a lifetime dream when she and Joe went on an African Safari. Barbara loved all animals especially her Siberian huskies and her last beloved dog, Abby. Her love of horses led her to riding many years at the Guilford Riding School where she was also very involved in fundraising events, shows and competitions.
Barbara was a presence at the school and she cherished her camaraderie and friendships with both 4 legged as well as 2 legged friends there. An avid gardener and reader she loved nothing more than going to the Guilford beach for a swim. Barbara had a special gift for caring and was loved by many, she will be very much missed.
Friends are invited to a memorial service on Thursday Nov. 8 at 11 am at the First Congregational Church, 122 Broad St, Guilford. Burial will be private.
