Obituary for Benjamin Lear Jr. Ben Lear Jr.,75, passed away peacefully at the Episcopal Church Home on October 29, 2018. He was a Catholic and a member of Mary Queen of Peace Parish. He is predeceased by his mother Evelyn Howard, his step-father George Howard and his father Ben Lear Sr

He is survived by his friends Janis Conlin, Diana Johnson, Eileen Daleness and a host of many others who cared deeply for him. Ben was born in Louisville, attended Mt. Saint Francis in Indiana, and earned his teaching degree at Western Kentucky University.

He studied under Dr. Charles Shedd, helping to develop and implement materials to teach dyslexic children. He worked with dyslexic children at Berea College as an instructor and co-director of the program. He taught in Titusville, FL and in Natchez, Mississippi before returning to Louisville.

In 1973, Ben joined St. Helens Parish, and began teaching at Saint Helens Parish grade school. He remained there until his retirement in 2001. As a teacher there, he became a role model for his students and a mentor to his fellow faculty members.

He served as the official photographer and videographer for all school events. He helped to implement technology in the classroom. He organized and coached the school academic teams, as well as being an avid supporter of the school’s sports programs.

Most students remember him as the teacher who took them to Washington D.C. on their 8th grade field trip. He supported his parish by serving on the parish council, the school board, the Booster board and the Stewardship committee. Ben was also a Eucharistic minister.

Ben had many additional interests. He had multiple jobs with Andy Frain and the Kentucky State Fair for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Saint Joseph Children’s Home.

He was a member of the Kentucky Railway Museum, and a Kentucky Colonel. He had a passionate interest in photography, technology, gambling, and watching his train videos. Ben had a positive influence on all and will be greatly missed.

We would like to express our deep appreciation for the wonderful compassionate care Ben received from his doctor, Dr. Jane Cornett and his caregivers at the Episcopal Church Home, Clingman Neighborhood. A funeral mass will be held at Mary Queen of Peace, 4005 Dixie Highway, Louisville, KY on November 10 at 11:00 am. Memorial donations may be made to Notre Dame Academy, 1927 Lewiston Drive, Louisville, KY 40216.
