Bertha’s Obituary Bertha (Jackson) Elkins, departed this life on Monday, October 15th, 2018, two days shy of her 94th birthday. Bertha was born on October 17, 1924 to Eddie Jackson and Burdette Haile in Lugoff, South Carolina. As a child she attended Bolan Haven Mather Academy until the 9th grade.

In 1943, Bertha moved to New Rochelle, New York with her cousin Margaret also known as “Rea” and husband Allan Massey. She was employed for many years by the Puritan Laundry on South Fulton Avenue in Mount Vernon, New York as a laundry folder. Many years later, she was employed by Nice Pak packing company where she worked until 1993.

As she adjusted to her new life in New York, one thing never escaped her and that was the need to be connected to God and a church home. She began attending Mount Carmel Baptist church in New Rochelle, New York where she met her husband James “Nick” Elkins. They wed in June of 1950 and had their first and only child, Beretha Rana Elkins in June of 1951.

In the early 50’s Bertha moved to Mount Vernon, New York where she became an active member of Greater Centennial A.M.E. Zion church. She left to cherish her memory, granddaughter Bethany Asia Elkins and many family members and friends. Bertha was predeceased by her husband James “Nick” Elkins and daughter Beretha Rana Elkins.

Bertha was known for her kind heart and no nonsense personality. Believing God couldn’t bless a closed hand, she would share her last with anyone. To know her was to love her.

She will be truly missed.
