Betty Jane Polk Encalade, 86, beloved wife, mother, sister, Granny, Aunt Betty, and friend died Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Plano. Funeral: 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 18 at Pleasant Ridge Church of Christ in Arlington. Visitation preceding at 1:00 p.m. Betty was born on December 19, 1931 in Columbia, MS to Dewey and Maude Polk.

She married Ernest James Encalade on March 12, 1948 in New Orleans, LA. Betty gave birth to their only son, Ernest James Encalade Jr., on January 21, 1949. The family moved to Corpus Christi in 1959, and then to Arlington in 1987 to be near their son, daughter-in-law, and grandsons.

While in Corpus Christi, she taught Kindergarten and First Grade and attended the Lexington Baptist Church. Since moving to DFW she has worshipped at the Rush Creek Baptist Church and Pleasant Ridge Church of Christ in Arlington and the Parkway Hills Baptist Church in Plano. In addition to her congregational ministries, she spent much of her time volunteering with hospice, the Arlington Pregnancy Center, and the Plano ISD mentoring program.

Betty’s greatest loves were her family, her friends, and, most importantly, her LORD. She served each of these unswervingly and her devotion will be sorely missed. She was loved by all who knew her and this world will not be the same without her.

Preceded in death by: Husband, Ernest Encalade Sr.; Parents, Dewey and Maude Polk; Sisters, Dixie Turrittin, Marie Erhard, and Bobbie Killen; and brothers, Edwin Polk and John Polk. Survived by: Son, Ernie Encalade Jr. and wife Debbie of Arlington; Grandson Wesley Encalade and wife Tiffany of McKinney; Grandson Blake Encalade and wife Katy of Prosper; Great-Grandchildren, Avery, Abby, Brynna, Tripp, Grace, Evie, and Maggie; Brother Jimmy Polk and wife Diane of Cisco; Sister, Dianne Young and husband Chick of Dallas; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Metroplex Women’s Clinic or the American Heart Association.
