OBITUARY Betty McKay Whitler August 10, 1931 – November 20, 2018 A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel. The service will be officiated by Carl Rhoads, Associate Pastor of First United Methodist Church of Shreveport. The family will be receiving friends prior to the service, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel.
Betty passed away on Tuesday November 20, 2018. Betty was born August 10, 1931 in Camden, Arkansas, to Rev. Emmett Lee McKay and Virgie Pearl Bittle McKay.
She moved with her family from Arkansas to Louisiana at age 13 and she graduated from Church Point High School in 1948. Betty attended Centenary College and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education. She received her Master of Science Degree in Physical Education in 1961 from Northwestern State University and she also completed 30 hours above a Master Degree.
She taught Physical Education for two years in St. Francisville, LA, and taught Physical Education at Broadmoor Jr. High School for thirty-two years, retiring in 1988. Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shreveport all of her adult life. She was an avid sports fan and intently followed the Dallas Cowboys, Golden State Warriors and the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers.
She frequently would say her favorite sport was the one in season. Preceding Betty in death were her husband of over fifty years, James Otto Whitler, Jr and a brother, Bobby Lee McKay. She is survived by sons, Ron Whitler (Celia) of Franklin, TN, and Mike Whitler (Renee) of Shreveport, LA.
Grandsons, Max and Zach Whitler of Franklin TN; step-granddaughter, Lindsay Langford (Scott) of Indianapolis, IN and step-grandson, Taylor Gosslee (Katelyn) of Houston, TX. Great grandsons, Lucas and Cooper Langford of Indianapolis, IN and sister-in-law, Norma Whitler Lloyd (Dean) of Girard, IL. Also, she is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and longtime friends, Alice Clegg, Norma Hairston and Louise Methvin.
