Bobby “Mighty Joe” Young, Sr. December 21, 1933 – February 01, 2019 Share this obituary Send Sympathy Gifts Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Plantersville – Bobby “Mighty Joe” Young, 85, died peacefully Friday, February 1, 2019, at the Meadows in Fulton. A Lee County native, he was born December 21, 1933, to Sam Thomas Young and Betty Flora Young. Joe was married 37 years to Georgie Mae Hodges Young who died in 1993.

For most of his adult life, he worked in the electrical industry and successfully owned and operated Young’s Electric Company for more than 30 years prior to his retirement. A contagious sense of humor and a selfless heart, Joe had a fierce passion for serving others. Joe served three full terms as Alderman for the City of Verona.

He was President and one of the founding members of Mingo’s Motorcycle Club and was instrumental in helping organize the first Tupelo Toy Run benefiting the children of the Tupelo Children’s Mansion. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a Shriner, and a Scout Master with Troop 99 in Verona. Joe was an adventurer who loved to travel and ride his motorcycle.

He touched more lives than he may have realized and will be sorely missed. He loved classic cars, socializing and spending time with his family. Joe was actively involved in mission work and helped build a church and parsonage in Haiti.

He was a long-time member of Verona United Methodist Church. Survivors include his children, Wendy Martin and her husband, Scott of Carolina Community, Bobby Joe Young, Jr. of the Auburn Community and Jennie Young and her husband, Guy Weeks of Arlington, Tennessee; his sister, Mary Goff and her husband, Bobby of the Pontocola Community; and his granddaughter, Maggie Martin and her fiancé, Manterio Green of Mooreville. He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Georgie Young; his parents, Sam and Flora Young; his sisters, Sammie Burleson, Martha Miller and Patsy Bass.

Visitation will be from 2 until 5 p.m. Sunday, February 3, 2019 at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo. Services honoring his life will be 11 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2019 at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Buddy Smith officiating.

Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Phillip Hall, Lee Miller, Bill Collins, Larry Taylor, Patrick Hannigan and Jeff Goff. Memorials may be made to the Lee County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, 607 Main Street C, Tupelo, MS 38804.
