Byron L Grubb passed away Friday, November 30th peacefully in his sleep. Byron was born August, 11th of 1937 to William and Clara Grubb of Rose City MN. The Grubb family moved to Conrad in the late 40’s Byron attended Conrad School with older brother Erling.
Byron had a younger sister Karin and when Byron was a junior in High School a big surprise a new baby brother, now known as Big Don. Byron worked all throughout school age working for the family construction business. Upon graduating High School in 1955 Byron had already served the Navy Reserve for 2 years.
In June of 1956 Byron married his High School sweetheart, Mourine Prewett, together they had 5 children. There is so much to reflect upon Byron’s life. Byron started work the age of at 9 years old setting pins at the Conrad Bowling Alley.
When Byron was old enough to see over the steering wheel he could be found driving the family gravel truck. Byron worked alongside his dad and brother in the family excavating and gravel hauling business. At age 26 Byron enlisted in the active navy where Byron moved to many exotic locations: 4 years Butte and 4 years Billings.
He worked as a storekeeper where he handled all the supplies to the Naval training centers throughout Montana. Upon completion of active duty in the Navy the family moved to Conrad. Byron was the first walking letter carrier in Conrad, walking 10 miles each day, rain or snow.
During the time as the local letter carrier Byron was a city council member for 16 years. After retiring the postal service Byron was elected mayor where he served for 8 years. The local Lyons Club played a large part in Byron’s life where he served as a president, treasurer, and chaired many successful fundraising projects.
The Lyons club rewarded Byron’s years of dedicated service by electing him Grand Marshal of 2006. Byron was known as the “Pancake Man” during the Whoop Up breakfast. September of 1984 Byron and his wife co-chaired Conrad’s seventy- fifth Two Day Diamond Jubilee Celebration.
Byron and Mourine coordinated all activities including an air show, parade, fun day in the park, volley ball games, style show even a mustache contest. The couple put together a fabulous fun filled event for the City of Conrad. Byron the Bikeman left behind a legacy performing low cost or no cost bike repair.
Byron was always there for the kids. Whether it was to fix a flat or raise the seat. The kids knew they could go knocking and get help at Byron’s bike shop.
Through Byron’s Bike Shop he teamed up with the Lyons Club where children in need received bikes for Christmas and bike helmets for the kindergarten class. This is just the shortlist of Byron’s involvement in the City of Conrad and the community. Although Byron was dedicated to the community his wife and family always came first.
Granddaughter Tara, says it best. “We are going to miss his jokes and tricks, his stories, worth ethic his advice, his love but most of all we are going to miss looking into his eyes, his eyes were the most amazing blue. Like worn blue jeans, they glittered with mischief and looked as if they were always smiling and they were bright and warm as he lovingly gazed at his bride and family every.
Single. Day. Byron LeRoy Grubb is preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Clara Grubb he is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mourine.
Brother Erling and wife Loretta Grubb, sister Karin and husband Willie David, brother Don and wife Patty Grubb, daughter Pam and husband Willy Marsh, son Cary and wife Prudy Grubb, son Tracy and wife Karen Grubb, son Ryan Grubb, daughter Dana and husband Rich McNeece. Byron was the grandfather to 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Memorial services will be Saturday, December 8, at 2PM at the Conrad Mission Church.
