Obituary for Carl Belson Carl J. Belson passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Woodlawn Meadows Retirement Village, Hastings, MI. Carl was born February 11, 1923 to parents Gladys (Gardner) and Elmer Belson. Carl graduated from Hastings High School in 1941 and married his high school sweetheart, Mary, in July 1942.
They were married for 76 years. Carl and Mary were co-owners of the Barn Market in Hastings during the 1950’s. Carl was an Army Air Corp aviation cadet taking his basic training at Miami Beach, FL.
While in the service he attended college at Norwich University in Northfield, VT. After his discharge he attended Western Michigan University on the GI Bill. Carl was a member of the Hastings Masonic Blue Lodge 52, Hastings Masonic Chapter 56 and Battle Creek Commandry 33.
He was a former member of the Shriner’s Saladin Temple in Grand Rapids. Carl was a charter and life member of the Hastings Elk’s Lodge, a life member of the Battle Creek DAV 7 and a member of the Hastings American Legion 45. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hastings.
After selling the Barn Market, Carl was employed by Bronson Hospital and ended his working career at the Kellogg Company. Carl is survived by daughters Merry Ossenheimer and Sandra (Dennis) Shaffer, 5 grandchildren Lee (Lisa Long) Ossenheimer, Christin (Rudy) Othmer, Keri (Don) Hayes, Kristi (Seung-ho Park) Shaffer, Kelly Shaffer and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by his parents, wife Mary, siblings Gaye Pavese, Howard Belson, Jo Riemann and son-in-law Dale Ossenheimer, Jr. Services will be held on Saturday January 12, 2019 at 4:00 at the First Presbyterian Church with visitation beginning at 3:00.
Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Nashville. Daniel’s Funeral Home is making arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or the First Presbyterian Church of Hastings in Carl’s name.
