Obituary for Carl Oscar Melsness Print Carl Oscar Melsness passed away February 20, 2019 at The VA Medical Center in Denver, CO. He was born on June 13, 1953, to Carl I and Berniece A (Strom) Melsness in Red Lake Falls, MN. He lived in Erskine, MN, until the age of 14 when the family moved to Moorhead, MN.
He graduated from Moorhead Senior High School in 1971. He joined the US Air Force in 1972 where he served for 22 years before retiring as a Master Sergeant. He married Geraldine (Jeri) Balzum on October 27, 1972.
They were married for 46 years and during that time lived both Stateside and in Europe. They had one son, Matthew Robert, in April of 1974. The three of them enjoyed many adventures and created many memories as they moved around the world.
While serving in the Air Force, Carl received an Associate’s Degree from the Community College of the Air Force and another from Laramie Community College. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked as a carpenter for many years until his health required, he take life easier. Carl was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.
Matthew was his pride and joy and his grandchildren filled his heart with joy and love. We will all miss him but we carry many wonderful memories in our hearts. Carl was preceded in death by his parents and twin sister, Claire Melsness Parker.
He is survived by his wife, Jeri; son Matthew and daughter-in-law, Jess of Greeley CO; three grandchildren, Madelaine, Logan, and Rhiann; and his sister, Mary Ellen (Melsness) Hinty of Gallion OH. In addition, Carl is survived by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law who always loved him and welcomed him as their own. A Vigil for the Deceased will be 4:00 p.m. Tuesday followed by a visitation until 7:00 p.m. in The Lakeview Chapel at Schrader, Aragon and Jacoby Funeral Home.
