She was 89 and a lifetime resident of Monticello. Carol was born in Monticello on December 20, 1929, to the late John P. Mapes and Lela Scheuren Mapes.

She was given her first name because she was a Christmas baby. She served the church in many capacities: Altar Guild president, Wesleyan Service Guild secretary, a founding mother and board member of Tiny Tot’s Preschool, and church trustee.

To aid her husband in the William J. Her chocolate cake and strawberry jello salad were the first dishes to be devoured at family reunions and church functions.

She is survived by her husband and best friend of sixty five years, William J. Lane, at home; two daughters: Karen Rhodes and her husband Steven of Austin, TX, and Corinne Lane and her husband Robert Field of Bloomingburg, NY; a son: John Lane and his wife Kelly of Bloomfield, NY; two grandsons: William J. Lane and Michael J. Lane; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers: John F. Mapes and Barth E. Mapes.
