OBITUARY Carolyn Ann Madden April 19, 1941 – January 4, 2019 Carolyn Lally Madden Carolyn loved family, cats, Mike, Elvis, and food. They comforted her. She tended to a long line of happy cats including Mickey, Minnie, and now Angel—all of Longwood, FL.
As far as food is concerned, Carolyn loved eggplant Parmesan and veal Parmesan. She loved her husband Mike’s spaghetti with meatballs and sausage. Loved red sauce, couldn’t tolerate brown sauce.
Loved Diet Pepsi and Cosmos on the sweet side. More than anything else, she loved family dinners—at her beloved stepmother Rhoda’s in Massapequa Park and at her sisters’ places elsewhere on Long Island and in Brooklyn. At these family events, she experienced real joy, surrounded by family and love.
She also loved New Years’ Eve, Fourth of July, and Labor Day at Aunt Helen’s in New Jersey. Loved the traditional family meet-ups at Christmas every year to see the monster tree in Rockefeller Center, followed by a quick candle-lighting visit to St. Patrick’s Cathedral and a hearty family dinner (for 8 to 10 revelers) in Little Italy. And in Florida she loved her regular outings with beloved brother John and her monthly outings with fellow Red Hat members.
She enjoyed quality time with friends, family visits and nightly phone calls from her dear cousin Rand in New York, who was more like a brother to Carolyn. Carolyn’s parents divorced when she was young and when her father remarried she moved to Long Island to be with him. There Carolyn received her high school diploma.
Almost immediately she started her 18-year run as a bookkeeper with Melina Yarn Company in Times Square. In this period, she met Michael Madden and Carolyn fell in love. Melina Yarn Company was closing and Michael encouraged Carolyn to look for another job and Carolyn soon got a job at the U.S. Post Office International Mail Facility at JFK Airport.
Carolyn retired in 2000, after 29 years with the post office. In 1988 Carolyn married Michael Madden, also a New Yorker. They lived in Carolyn’s Flushing apartment filled with Elvis memorabilia until Carolyn’s mother, Helen, then living in Longwood, Florida, started to experience health problems and become increasingly frail.
In 2005 Carolyn and Mike gave up their apartment in Queens and moved to Florida to look after Helen, who died in 2010. In recent years Carolyn and Mike managed to enjoy a relaxed retirement lifestyle—the occasional lunch or dinner at nearby Café Murano, or Seasons 52 among other local favorites. Ongoing health problems resulted in Carolyn having her left leg amputated above the knee in 2013.
Mike cared for her the best he could and cooked delicious meals every night. Carolyn Madden passed away at age 77 on Friday, January 4, 2019, in the loving arms of her sisters. She will be sorely missed by those who loved her, including her husband Michael Madden, her cousin Rand Blunk, her siblings John Lally, Maggie Lally, Sharon Matiles and Susan Mensch, many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews (Urka, Madden, Lally, Amato).
