Carolyn Kay Mapel, 76, of Burlington, died at 3:00 AM Monday, June 18, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born March 24, 1942, in Burlington, she was the son of Carl and Madelyn Adell Eckey Shumaker. On June 18, 1961, she married Richard Neil Mapel in Danville.

He later passed on May 26, 2003. She worked for Ritter’s Garden Center for around 10 years and was a homemaker. Carolyn graduated from Danville High School in 1960.

She was of Methodist Faith. She enjoyed playing cards and gardening. She always had a beautiful, spotless home with a flair for decorating.

She was a loving wife and mother who always took care of her family and was a good friend to all. Survivors include three daughters, Tammy Underwood and Kimberly (Curtis) Schenk both of Burlington, and Amy (John Schulz) Mapel of West Burlington; and three grandchildren, Richard Underwood, Rebekah Schenk, and Autumn Schenk. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister Vickie and one brother Steve.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for Mrs. Mapel will be 10:00 AM Friday, June 22, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in Jaggar Cemetery.

A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the burial. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Great River Hospice and the Great River Klein’s Center.
