Carolyn Minor Popplewell, 77, of Louisville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 12, 2019, with her daughters at her side. Carolyn was born in Lebanon, Kentucky to James Bell Minor and Margie Harmon Minor. She graduated from Lebanon High School in 1959 and attended Western Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1963.

She later earned her Master of Education in 1975 from the University of Louisville. On December 22, 1963 she married William Dean Popplewell of Jamestown, KY, celebrating their nuptials in a record winter storm event. Carolyn was employed by Jefferson County Public Schools as an elementary school teacher at Zachary Taylor, Stivers, and Dunn Elementary School, retiring in 1992.

Following this, she worked for 4H in Louisville for several years before volunteering for Hosparus Health of Louisville. She was an avid gardener, a good friend, master knitter, and faithful member of Hurstbourne Baptist Church. She faced her cancer diagnosis with great courage and treasured all the moments made with her family during that journey.

She was proud to participate in clinical trials of new cancer therapies to benefit those following after her. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, William Dean Popplewell. She is survived by her daughters, Dr. Leslie Popplewell (Bob Melisso) of Monrovia, CA and Cynthia Popplewell of Nashville, TN; two grandchildren, Robert Dean and Baxter Lee Melisso; brother-in-law, Dr. Howard Kent Popplewell of Jamestown, KY; and niece, Sandra F. Popplewell and nephew, Dr. Howard James Popplewell (Johnna) also of Jamestown, KY, as well as extended family and friends.

There will be a visitation from 10am – 12pm followed by a memorial service at 12pm on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Ratterman Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Road, East Louisville, 40243. A graveside service will be held at a later date. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hosparus Health of Louisville in Carolyn’s name.
