A devoted wife, loving mother, and loyal friend, Carolyn was born in New Kensington, Pa, on February 12, 1950, to Virginia and Fred Jug, Sr. Carolyn was a proud coalminer’s daughter who grew-up on Logans Ferry Hill in a loving home, next door to her grandparents, along with her younger brother, Fred (Nancy and son Brian). Some of her fondest memories included spending time with her grandfather and his dogs, Pancho and Pepper, attending Slovenian picnics, traveling every Sunday to see extended family in Johnstown, and of watching her father flash the light on his coal miner’s hat when she picked him up from the mine.

As a young girl, she was a Brownie and Girl Scout. At Plum Senior High School, Carolyn was the drum majorette and twirled a fire baton at the football games. She was also the President of the Future Homemakers of America Club.

She loved American history, and her love of history and politics continued throughout her life. After graduating in 1968, Carolyn was employed at the Miner’s Clinic in New Kensington as a medical records clerk. She later became the switchboard operator and treated her callers with great respect.

Patients asked for her by name and shared their lives with her. If you ever heard, “Good Morning Russellton Medical Group, New Kensington Health Center, or UPMC Burtner Road”, then you talked to our mom. At work, Carolyn always enjoyed a good cup of tea, feeding the squirrels who frequented her work window, and talking with her friends.

In September 1973, Carolyn married her loving husband, Ronald, who she met in January during a Saturday night mass at St. Mary of Czestochowa Church, New Kensington. They had two children, Cheryl (John) and Ronnie, Jr., (Sara). After becoming a mother, Carolyn’s life revolved around her family.

While working full-time, she somehow managed to sew Halloween costumes, bake for bake sales, and be a room mother, PTG member, cub scout helper, cheerleading coach, parish picnic worker, and the master organizer of and driver to all her kids’ activities. She never missed anything. Carolyn continued working so that her children could acquire a Catholic education as that was of upmost importance to her.

She was proud of her children’s accomplishments, having dedicated her life to ensuring their hopes and dreams were fulfilled. Carolyn instilled in them the same values that she learned from her parents – hard work, reliance on faith, the value of education, and the need to treat all with love and respect. Family traditions and holidays were also very important to Carolyn.

She carried on the tradition of the Polish Christmas Eve dinner and attended the blessing of the baskets. She loved having family holidays, especially Christmas, planning parties for even the smallest accomplishment, and dancing a Polka. Carolyn was proud of her Slovenian heritage and was a 50 year plus member of the Slovenian National Benefit Society.

As a devout Catholic, Carolyn kissed her cross every day, asking for Christ’s mercy and truly believed that with God, all things were possible. Throughout her life, she was very close to her mother who instilled the importance of faith in her. They spent countless hours talking on the phone, shopping, and enjoying life together.

In her later years, Carolyn and her husband cruised the Caribbean and traveled to many places, including Disney World and the Great Smokey Mountains. After retiring in 2007, Carolyn cared for her aging mother and mother-in-law, and then watched her grandchildren (John Jr., and Ana) who affectionately named her “Ninna”. As Ninna, she blew bubbles in the yard, danced in the kitchen, played ball, sang Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and baked the best “Ninna bread” ever.

She took her grandkids to school and eagerly awaited to bring them home to their favorite place, “Ninna’s house” – because all the hugs, kisses, and “I Love You Mores” made everything just right. Carolyn will always be remembered for her kindness, willingness to help anyone, and her gentle smile. We will miss her greatly but know that a true angel has received her wings.

Her wisdom and words of love will transcend time. She will be in our hearts forever. “We love you.

Lahko noc”.
