Carolyn Ruth Jensen was born December 1, 1933 at her grandparents home in Iowa. When Carolyn was in 6th grade, her home in Missouri was destroyed by a tornado. After losing everything, they had to move back to Iowa.

She attended Hazel Dell #6 Country School and Underwood Consolidated High School where she met Robert (Bob) Messerli. Bob & Carolyn were married on February 8, 1952. She then worked at Council Bluffs Savings Bank.

Bob had been drafted into the Army and Carolyn followed him to Kansas and then finally to Germany. She lived with a German family that didn’t speak English, so communication was a learning experience for all! They lived there for 6-7 months.

Carolyn traveled by ship back to the United States. Then when Bob returned home, they bought their first house in Council Bluffs, Iowa where their first child, Paula, was born. Peggy and Timothy followed, and the family of 5 moved to Staplehurst, Nebraska and then to Edgar, Nebraska in 1962.

Carolyn stayed home raising the kids as a “Domestic Engineer”. Soon after, Tad, Ty, and Trudy were added to the family. She liked sewing, flowers, birds and butterflies.

Her family was her world, and she took good care of them. She would often say a phrase to her kids and grandkids that will always be remembered, instead of saying goodbye, it was “Have fun, but be good! ” Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law.

Survivors include her husband: Bob Messerli of Edgar, her sister: Donna Sherbondy of Colorado Springs, CO, and her children: Paula (Craig) Johnson of Independence, MO, Peggy (Roger) Rumsey of Oak, NE, Tim Messerli of Edgar, Tad Messerli of Edgar, Ty Messerli of Westminster, CO, Trudy (Jon) Kamler of San Antonio, TX. She is also survived by her 17 grandchildren: Andrew (Holly) Johnson, Samuel (Kathy) Johnson, Joseph (Caylee) Johnson, Anna (Chanler) Sechrest, Isaiah Johnson, Amos Johnson, Emily (Damon) Applegate, Kelsey (Anthony) Osborn, Andrea (Curt) Gosser, and Josie Kamler, her 10 great-grandchildren: Charli, Kalli, Samuel, Kaiden, Carter, Norah, Chloe, Everett, Emmett, and Odin, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends! Funeral services will be held this Saturday 2:00 pm, October 6, 2018 at the Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Edgar, Nebraska.

Pastor Eldon Shetler will be officiating. Burial will be held in the Edgar Cemetery, Edgar, Nebraska. Condolences may be sent to the family at wmsfh.com.
