Carrol (Cuddy) Neil White October 2, 1924 – December 6, 2018 Carrol Neil White, our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away in Brookings, Oregon on December 6, 2018, without a murmur or complaint, and was reunited with his sweetheart, Mary Ellen. Cuddy was born on October 2, 1924, in Oakville, Washington to Shannon O. White and Leona Mary Bailey. He was the second son of six children.

He was a talented young child who was gifted musically. He had… Read More » a wonderful singing voice, and he shared this talent with many throughout his long life, performing often. He lived in the state of Washington until 1936 when he moved with his parents to Medford, Oregon.

He graduated from Medford High School in 1942 after which he attended what was then Oregon State College for a time until he was drafted into the Navy in 1944. He served in the South Pacific on the USS Laurens, APA 153, as a gunner’s mate and participated in the invasion of Luzon as well as the invasion of Okinawa. Ships around him were struck by kamikaze planes, but he returned unscathed and met Mary Ellen Golden on August 10, 1945.

They were married on April 27, 1946, and later sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on December 5, 1951. In 1955, the family moved to Grants Pass where the family lived until 1974. During this time Cuddy worked at Rogue Gold Dairy and Arden Farms Dairy.

He was a faithful and devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the bishopric of the Grants Pass Ward as well as a missionary, sharing his testimony of Jesus Christ and the restored Gospel with many who were converted. Cuddy changed jobs in 1974 to work for County Maid Dairy and moved to Brookings. His activity in the Church continued and he served as Branch President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brookings and was instrumental in preparing the Branch to become a Ward as well as a moving force in raising the funds for the construction of a chapel.

Cuddy retired in 1988 and he and Mary Ellen toured the US and later served as temple workers in the Portland and Medford Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They also traveled to Canada, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Mexico and Hawaii. Cuddy was devoted to his six children, two sons and four daughters, as well as his numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He loved little children and even in his 80’s would get down on the floor and play with them. Cuddy was universally loved by all who knew him, and he leaves a name and a fame to his family for his many stories which he often told about his experiences and the many times his life was spared. They also remember him for the kindness and love he always showed to them.

His faithfulness and patience were a shining example to his family. His name and memory will be held in honor and reverence from generation to generation. Special thanks to Karolyn and Robert Pieren who cared for their father and father-in-law the last two years preceding his death.

Cuddy was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ellen, soon after they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, his parents, his brothers Arvid N. White and E. Lyle White as well as his sister, Lila White Hyde. He is survived by his six children, Larry (Janice) White, Karolyn (Robert) Pieren, Shawna (David) Peay, Angela (Jamie) Burton, Lisa (Paul) Barnes, David (Amy) White as well as two brothers Philip L White and Shannon C. White. He was the proud grandfather of 36 grandchildren and 103 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 15 at the Brookings Ward chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 770 Elk Street. Interment will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 17, at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, 2763 Riley Road, Eagle Point.
