Smith, 91, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Saturday, February 23, 2019, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb. He was born October 5, 1927, in Harrisburg, Illinois, the son of Amon and Anna (Hall) Smith, Charles first married Mary C. Paulsen on November 25, 1951 in Sycamore and after her death he married Shirley F. Friemuth on July 20, 1996 in Lee, Illinois at Calvary Lutheran Church. Charles was a veteran of the US Army.

He was employed by Anaconda in Sycamore for 27 years, later at Northern Illinois University in Recreational Services for over 10 years, retiring in 1993. Charles was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Lee. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; two sons, Paul Smith of Chesterfield, Virginia, Rodger (Cindy) Smith of New Port Richey, Florida; three grandchildren, Adrian (Bethany) Smith, Benjamin Smith, Everett Smith; two great-grandchildren, Connor, Suzanna; four step-children, Gail (Mark) Hanus, Kim Swanlund, Brian Swanlund, Steve (Susan) Friemuth; and six step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary; four brothers; and four sisters. A family memorial service will be held at a later date with full military honors by DeKalb American Legion Post 66. Burial of cremated remains will be at Charter Grove Cemetery in Sycamore.
