Charles Evans Coe, Jr. (Chuck) Of White Plains, Maryland, passed away suddenly on May 6, 2019 at the age of 61. A beloved husband, father, and brother, Chuck was born on February 11, 1958 in Pontiac, Michigan and was raised in nearby Milford, Michigan. Growing up he enjoyed playing hockey with friends, competing in motocross races, and camping.
At nineteen, Chuck joined the military and served in the Air Force for 20 years, primarily as an agent in the Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI). Chuck’s AFOSI career culminated in his being selected to manage the first-ever dedicated forensic media analysis lab in the Department of Defense. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for NASA OIG Computer Crimes Division (CCD) and assumed the role and responsibility of NASA’s CCD Special-Agent-in-Charge, overseeing both the technical support and operational functions of the division.
In 2004, Chuck was selected to serve as the first Assistant Inspector General for IT Audits and Computer Crime Investigations (ITACCI) for the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Inspector General (OIG). Chuck was a 2007 Federal 100 Award Winner. More recently, Chuck received the SAS 2010 Enterprise Excellence Award for Government.
He held both a Master and Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Networking with honors as well as Associate degrees in Criminal Justice and Electronic Systems Technology. His unfailing commitment to “doing the right thing”, working collaboratively across disciplines, his care for his employees, and his infectious drive for excellence impacted every single person he worked with; his legacy and impact are far reaching and lasting. Most of all, Chuck loved spending time with his family and was a humble, kind, and devoted husband and father.
Chuck met the love of his life, Norma Jean, while stationed in Phoenix, Arizona and the two were inseparable since their wedding on May 7, 1982. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, riding his bicycle, traveling, discussing politics, listening to suspense novels, walking his Jack Russell Terrier, and attending all of his daughter’s volleyball games, piano recitals, and summer swim meets. In addition to his wife of 37 years, he is survived by his daughter, Rachel Marie, sisters Deborah (Dennis) Kendall and Sharon (Bruce) Hubbard as well as many extended family and friends.
They will miss his quiet manner, quick wit, and sense of humor. There will be a viewing on Tuesday evening, May 14th at Raymond Funeral Service in LaPlata, MD, from 4pm-8pm with a prayer service at 7pm. Family will be present.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 15th at 11:30am at St. Joseph’s Parish in Pomfret, MD, with refreshments following mass. As a retired Master Sergeant, Chuck will be buried in Arlington Cemetery at a date to be determined.
