Raymond Lee McDonald of Newburg, Maryland peacefully entered into the Lord’s presence on May 3, 2019 at his home. He was 86. Mr. McDonald was born October 14, 1932 in Fluvanna County, Virginia to Ernest Connor McDonald and Lucille Viola Devincent McDonald.

In his younger years, he worked as a “hop” driving cars for dealerships as he had a “need for speed”. He worked for many years in the warehouse district in Washington, DC, retiring in the late 70’s as a member of the Warehouse Union. After that, he started driving trucks for a living which lead him to a job hauling coal and ash for B. Frank Joy Co. at Morgantown Generating Station in Newburg, Maryland, which he retired from in the early 90’s.

Mr. McDonald was a talented singer and guitarist, sometimes playing in a band with his brothers and at home with his mother and close friends. He was often found outside fishing (he holds the record for the first black drum fish and his picture can be seen at Dan’s Store in Newburg, Maryland), hunting, crabbing, and gardening in his free time. A jovial and generous man, Mr. McDonald often gave away much of his bounty.

Mr. McDonald’s generosity earned him the name of the “Candy Man” after his retirement as he passed out candy in his neighborhood and around town at the local Walmart Store in La Plata, Maryland. Mr. McDonald was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest McDonald and Lucille Hinze; his wife, Helen (Thompson) McDonald; his daughter, Teresa D’Alloisio; and his siblings, Brent McDonald, Jimmy “Mac” McDonald, and Mary Chiasson. He is survived by his brother, Clint McDonald of Midlothian, Virginia; his daughters, Cheri Henderson of Orlando, Florida and Cindy McDonald of Waldorf, Maryland; his step-children, Arlene Swann, George Goldsmith, Gary Goldsmith, Joan Roberts, and Anita Grimes; his grandchildren, Colin Henderson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dwayne Barber of Waldorf, Maryland, Cynethia Mahone of Cameron, North Carolina, Patrick Henderson of Orlando, Florida, Nathaniel Conley Jr. of Clinton, Maryland, and Malik Lumpkin EL and Taliq Lumpkin EL of Waldorf, Maryland; and his great grandchildren, Elijah Henderson, Esther Henderson and Eleanor Henderson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dwayne Barber Jr. of Miami, Florida, Evelyn Barber and Dai’won Barber of Wichita, Kansas, and Gracen Mahone and Leia Mahone of Cameron, North Carolina.
