He was preceded in death by his wife, Dottie Lou Wilburn Thomas. She was retired from the family business at CR Thomas Old Place Restaurants. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sons, Chuck and Darrell Thomas.

He is survived by his children, Robert Thomas (Nikki) of Ironton, OH, Cheryl Thomas, Ashland, KY, Rhonda Thomas-Ferrell of Ironton, OH, Michael Thomas of Ashland, KY. and Elizabeth Lynn Thomas-Christian (Mark) of Largo FL; eighteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Arrangements are incomplete at Henson and Kitchen Mortuary, East Pea Ridge Road, Huntington, WV.
