Charles Warren Harrington, 89, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away early Tuesday morning, October 9, 2018, in the comfort of his beloved home. Charlie was born on the family farm in DeWitt on December 4, 1928, to Chauncey and Hazel (Walrod) Harrington. His dedication to farming began at a very young age.

Following his father’s untimely death, he worked hard to both grow the farm operation and finish school. Charlie graduated from DeWitt High School in 1946, and later served briefly in the Army during peacetime in Germany. He met his future wife, JoAnn Brauns, while attending a Rural Young People camp.

They married on September 23, 1956. Charlie was a lifelong and proud member of the DeWitt community. He was deeply invested in agriculture, community development, fine arts, and education.

Charlie served on various boards, including the Iowa Soybean Producer’s Board, Clinton County Pork Producers, Clinton County School Board, and First National Bank. He raised Chester Whites, and in 1953 was awarded Grand Reserve Champion Boar and Junior Champion Sow at the Iowa State Fair. In 1960 he was named Iowa Master Corn Grower and received the Register and Tribune Corn King Trophy.

Charlie was a member of DeWitt United Methodist Church. His favorite activities involved his children, grandchildren, community events, and annual trips to Disney World. Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, JoAnn; daughters, Beth Harrington-Scheckel of DeWitt, Ann (Chris McPartland) of Minneapolis, and Cheryl (Brian) Kinney of DeWitt; grandchildren, Emily (Nick) Cornwell, Bryan and Jenna Scheckel, Claire and Max McPartland, Coleen, Nathan, Sean and Evan Kinney; a sister, Marjorie Rutenbeck; nieces and nephews.

An open house visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. Saturday, October 13, 2018, at DeWitt United Methodist Church with lunch being served between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. A Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in the church. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. Memorials are suggested to the Frances Banta Waggoner Community Library of DeWitt or the DeWitt United Methodist Church.
