Curtis’ Obituary Curtis Duane Hansen, 90 of Le Mars, Iowa, died on January 30, 2019 at Bickford Assisted Living in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron, Iowa. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Akron.

Visitation with the family present will begin at 5:00 p.m., with a Prayer Service 7:00 p.m., all on Monday, February 4, 2019 at the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Curtis was born on September 12, 1928 on a farm near Centerville, Iowa. He went to country school in South Dakota, one being Garland Country School.

He started working as a hired farm hand and helping his dad farm after 8th grade. Curtis was drafted into the army on January 9, 1951 and was honorably discharged on January 8, 1953. Curtis and a young woman, Barbara, had met and fallen in love.

Barbara Ellen Bay left her senior year of high school to travel to Kentucky to marry him. They were united in marriage on April 5, 1952 in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Curtis was a member of the 76th Tank Battalion Company B and worked on repairing and driving armored tanks.

While in Kentucky, he enjoyed the Grand Ole Opry performers. As a young couple, they lived and worked various places before settling on Barbara’s family farm. It was Century Family Farm and they lived there for 42 years before they retired and moved to Le Mars in 1991.

Curtis then began working delivering furniture and was a security guard at Wells Fargo. Curtis didn’t have many hobbies, but he enjoyed visiting with friends, listening to country music, and driving his old red truck around town. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor.

Curtis is survived by his daughter, Sonja (Jeff) Harms of Le Mars; son, Staci Hansen of Akron, IA; 5 grandchildren: Samantha (Kyle) Harms Kedley, Dylan Harms, Brandon Hansen, Morgan Hansen (special friend, Blake Merchant), and Jacob Hansen (special friend, Brooke Hingst); 2 great grandchildren: Hailey Rachel Harms and Xander Alvin Merchant and two more great grandchildren on the way. Curtis is preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Melvin Hansen; his wife, Barbara Hansen; brother, LaRue Hansen; two grandchildren: Rachel and Darin Harms; and daughter in law, Lori Hansen.
