Curtis’ Obituary Obituary – Curtis LaVance “Vanny” Carthen Curtis LaVance Carthen 67, was born in Pawhuska, OK on January 8, 1952 and passed away at Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas on February 5, 2019. He moved to Wichita, Kansas with his parents at an early age and attended Wichita Public Schools. Curtis was an Alumni of Kansas University (KU) and held multiple degrees.

(Electrical Engineering/African American Studies/Journalism). He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Curtis was licensed Minister of the Gospel and a member of Greater Pentecostal Church of God in Christ under the pastoral care of Superintendent Herman Hicks. He leaves to cherish his memory: Wife, Johnnie Mae Carthen; Children, Ayanna Frierson (Tregg), Antoine L. Carthen (Gladys), Micah L. Carthen, Chastity Johnson; Brothers, Eugene B. Carthen, Sr., Carlos J. Carthen, Sr. (Dawn), Gregory Keith Carthen (Artina), Tony Guerrero Carthen (Anna), Derek Guerrero Carthen; Sister, Donna J. Carthen-Wright (Dwayne); Grandchildren, Tariq and Keira Frierson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene B. Carthen, Sr. and Evangelist Lois J. Lynch-Carthen; one brother, Micheal D. Carthen.
