Curtis’ Obituary Curtis William Hallaway Curtis (Curt) William Hallaway died peacefully at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND on May 21, 2019, surrounded by family. He was 70 years old. Curt was born in Devils Lake, ND, on February 6, 1949 to Cortland and Doris (Buntjer) Hallaway. He grew up in and near Rock Lake, ND (both on a farm and later in the town). He graduated from Rock Lake High School in 1967, where he was an accomplished football and basketball player.
He graduated from Mayville State University in 1971 with a degree in mathematics and composite science education. He also attended North Dakota State University. In 1971, Curt married Sandra Lynn Brunnemeyer, also from rural Rock Lake.
Curt and Sandy initially lived in Mayville, Rock Lake, Rolla, and St. Thomas, ND, and over 1976-1979 they welcomed three children into their home. They settled back in Rock Lake in 1981, where Curt worked as a high school science and math teacher and Sandy worked as an elementary teacher. They moved to Devils Lake in 2000, both continuing to work as teachers, before later retiring.
In his retirement, Curt has enjoyed spending time with his beloved wife Sandy, traveling, boating, fishing and spending time with family. Curt’s children remember him as a loving, kind, and gentle man who set an example as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Curt was regarded as an extraordinary teacher and coach, who inspired students with his passion for math and science, his leadership skills, and his warm, contagious personality.
He was deeply involved in the community, active as a volunteer firefighter, organizer of Rock Lake summer recreation programs, Sunday School superintendent and teacher at All Nations Lutheran Church (Rock Lake), basketball camp facilitator, and president of the church council at Peace Lutheran Church (Devils Lake). Curt loved coaching high school sports, including basketball, football, and track and field at Rock Lake, Rolla, and Starkweather-Munich. A highlight for Curt was helping to lead the Starkweather-Munich girls basketball team to the 2000 North Dakota state basketball championship, acting as assistant coach.
A funeral is scheduled for 4:00pm on Friday, May 24 at Peace Lutheran Church in Devils Lake, ND. Visitation at the church starts at 2:30. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Curt’s life.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks for their efforts in Curt’s care.
