In 1985, he was tapped to direct Western Australia Petroleum, a Chevron company in Perth, Australia, and managed oil production near Barrow Island. He retired in 1987. Earl was a lifelong, dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He served as bishop in New Orleans (1956-69) and was a counselor to stake president Melvin Gruwell. In London, he served as a high councilor and bishopric counselor. In Perth, he was an advisor to the young adults.
Earl and Beth served six full-time missions. Earl was called as secretary to the area presidency in Sydney, Australia, working with John Sonnenberg and his counselors. He then served as president of the California San Bernardino Mission (1989-92).
He served as a coordinator in the Church Missionary Department, and then as president of the Australia Melbourne Mission (1994-95). He was a district president at the Provo Missionary Training Center and then served as counselor in the Provo MTC presidency with David B. Wirthlin and Karl Farnsworth (2001-03). Later, he loved teaching classes at the Provo Senior MTC and teaching youth and seniors of the Orem Cascade Fifth Ward as they prepared to serve missions.
