Mr. David Proffitt Sams age 76 passed away in Jacksonville on Monday, March 18, 2019. Mr. Sams was born in Ashville, NC on January 1, 1943 to the late Erban and Emma “Donoho” Sams. Mr. David retired as a Civil Services Fire Fighter for the Naval Air Station Mayport and also served in the United States Airforce.

He was also known as “Big Dumbie” to his children and close friends. Mr. Sams also enjoyed playing softball, camping, and Saturday morning acorn fights. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Rae Sams; great-grandson, Colton Barnhart; and two sisters.

Survivors include his children, Heather (Craig) Pratt of Green Cove Springs, Tonya Barnhart of Starke, Scott Sams of Jacksonville, and Chris Sams of Green Cove Springs; his girlfriend, Elizabeth Coxwell; 7 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the DeWitt C. Jones Chapel on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. A visitation will precede the services beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Crosby Lake Cemetery. Arrangements are by JONES-GALLAGHER FUNERAL HOME OF STARKE 904-964-6200.
