We celebrate the life and memory of Richard Reed, Jr., whose death occurred Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at Memorial Health University Medical Center. DEACON RICHARD REED, JR, affectionately known as “Bowkay” was born in Garnett, SC on October 23, 1939, to the late Carrie Gillyard Reed and Richard Reed, Sr He received his formal education in the public school of Hampton County, SC.

At an early age he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and joined King Branch Baptist Church in Garnett, SC. Since a child, he loved working and creating things with his hands, a skill he learned from his father. In 1961, Deacon Reed began his career in farming and what a farmer he was.

O’ McDonald had nothing on him. Having possessed several skills and trades, he gained employment with Local 896. After leaving the union, he returned to his love of farming until his health failed and watching the soap operas became his new hobby.

DEACON REED joined Green Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Savannah, GA where he was later ordained as a deacon. On December 1, 2001, he was joined in holy matrimony to Gloria Holmes. DEACON REED transitioned from earth to glory on February 19, 2019, at Memorial Health Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and three sisters. Left to cherish his loving memories are his devoted wife, Gloria Reed; children, Richard L. Smart, Estill, SC, Rachel A. Reed and Janikqua “Miracle” Reed, Ridgeland, SC; stepdaughters, Latavise Singleton (Joseph) and Artheia Halali, Atlanta, GA. ; two brothers, Mack (Rosa) Reed, Ridgeland, SC, Siscro Reed, Savannah, GA; four sisters-in-law, Rose Reed, Fredricka Bangs, Crystal Lacount, Charlena Hall; two brothers-in-law, Charles Newton, Darrell Hall; three grandchildren, Raphael Reed, Janae’ Reed, Micah Stanford; one great-granddaughter, Claire Reed; godson Mins.
