Delores Althea Newman Hodges was born July 29, 1931 in Shelbina, Missouri; the daughter of Russell Sanford Newman and Irene Thompson Newman. She was the oldest of three children. She was preceded in death by both parents and her siblings, Mary Irene Newman and Bobby Russell Newman.

Delores, after graduation from Lincoln High School at the age of 15, worked at a coat factory in downtown Kansas City. She was later employed at Cricket West on the Country Club Plaza and served as the accountant/bookkeeper for the “high end” ladies fashion boutique. When Cricket West was sold, she was offered a bank teller position at the Commerce Bank, Plaza Branch.

Dee was soon promoted and retired from Commerce Bank as a bank officer. She married Barney Franklin Hodges on January 14, 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri. The marriage lasted until Barney’s death on May 12, 2006.

They are now together for all eternity. Delores was baptized at Pleasant Green Baptist Church as a child, under the pastorate of Reverend John Walter Love Underwood. She was active in her church, serving as un usher, a member of the church treasurer’s committee, working in the church pantry and serving as coordinator of the “Golden Agers” activities and events.

She faithfully attended her church until her physical health would not allow her to attend; even after her 2013 diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. She loved words-word searches, Wheel of Fortune, books, etc. She was the model of fashion and was most adept at coordinating her clothing ensembles.

She valued education and, though she was unable to attend college, she encouraged Bev and Ron throughout their educational pursuits. Delores A. Hodges departed this life on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at 6:09 pm. Survivors include two children, Beverly L. Manlove (Jeron) of Kansas City, KS and Ronald F. Hodges (Jean) of Lee’s Summit, MO; four grandchildren, Ronnie Jay Hodges (Ebony), Aaron Franklin Hodges (Fiancé, Kelly), Candace Chevonne Springfield (Justin) of Shawnee, KS and Andrea Laren of Kansas City, KS; six great grandchildren, Jaya Hodges, Nylah Hodges, Asa Hodges, Anaya Hodges, Mia Hodges, Jasmyn Springfield and Austin Springfield-all of the Kansas City metropolitan area; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and life-long friends.
