OBITUARY Doris Jean (Pressley) Pugh June 30, 1932 – December 14, 2018 Doris Jean Pressley Pugh passed away on Friday, December 14th in Pensacola, Florida. She was born in Winfield, Alabama and moved to Mobile with her family as a young child. Doris graduated from Murphy High School in 1950, and once her children had competed their education, attended the University of South Alabama graduating with a Bachelors degree in Education and a Masters degree in Counseling.
Doris was an Executive Secretary at Title Insurance Company and then secretary to the Dean of the College of Education at the University of South Alabama. After receiving her Master’s Degree, Doris went on to work for many years at The Penelope House, a domestic abuse shelter for women and children, assisting residents with completing their education and learning marketable job skills. Aside from raising her children and the joy of her grandchildren, Doris found her responsibilities at Penelope House the most fulfilling of her life.
Doris attended Oakdale Baptist Church and served as Kindergarten teacher, Children’s Choir Director and Sunday School teacher. Doris was a longtime member of Cottage Hill Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. Doris is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Kirkland Pugh, her parents Jack and Hazel Sykes Pressley, sister Catherine Pressley, brothers, Garland “Buddy” Pressley and Charles Pressley.
She is survived by her brother, Jimmy Pressley and beloved sister-in-law Janice Pressley (wife of Buddy Pressley), her children, David K. Pugh, Virginia “Ginny” E. Parks, Barbara J. (Mike) Grammar, Kirkland S. Pugh, III, Eugene (Rebecca) C. Pugh and Larry (Julie) J. Pugh and “adopted” daughter Janice (Michael) Pittman Britton. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Tommy Parks, Laurin (Chris) Gray, Chris Parks, Amanda Grammar, Stuart Parks, Ashleigh Grammar, Larry Pugh, Jr., Rachel (Golden) Reeves, Cullen Pugh, Audrey (Brent) Smith, Emma Pugh, Daniella Pugh, Kirkland Pugh IV and great grandsons, Jackson Allen Gray, Charles Easton Smith, Brycen Thomas Gray and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the caregivers at The Waterford at Creekside and Julie Brigham of Regency Hospice in Pensacola for the loving care provided to Mom the past few weeks.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Mobile Chapter of Ronald McDonald House, The Penelope House or your local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Visitation will be held at Pine Crest Funeral Home, 1931 Dauphin Island Parkway, on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 from 11:30 until service time of 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery.
