Doris Myrtle Pippin, 85, of Carthage, MO passed away Monday, July 23, 2018 among family and friends. Doris was born January 6, 1933 in Alba, MO, the third and youngest child of Tony and Edith (McGrew) Hicks. She was preceded in death by both older brothers, Robert and Jim Hicks.
Doris was soft spoken, yet stubborn and very bright. She excelled in school, graduating two years early from Carthage High School in 1949. She was working as a bookkeeper for Carthage Crushed Limestone… Read More » when she met their mill foreman, William Dorse Pippin.
Dorse and Doris married on July 11, 1965, raised their children together, and loved their family for 47 years until his passing in April of 2013. Each year they raised garden produce to sell at the farmers’ market in the Carthage square. They created wood crafts and quilts to sell at area craft shows and to give as gifts.
The couple also babysat for several local families alongside their grandchildren. Doris had an affinity for numbers and large jigsaw puzzles. Both of these skills were showcased in the elaborate quilt designs she routinely created.
She was known by friends and family for canning her delicious lime pickles and making Christmas candies, as well as her love for all things “pie”. Doris also devoted some of her time to interpreting for the deaf at local church services. She evidenced a lifelong commitment to her creator and spent many years as a member of the First Baptist Church of Carthage.
Doris is survived by eight children [Willard (Laurie) Pippin of Reeds, MO, Robert Thompson of Duenweg, MO, Toni (Joe) Aldridge of Springfield, MO, Rose (Greg) McPherson of Sarcoxie, MO, Terry (Sherry) Thompson of Carthage, MO, Larry Thompson of Webb City, MO, Debra (Jeff) Yeager of Neosho, MO, and Jackie (Keith) McPherson of Virginia Beach, VA] as well as many who call her “Grandma” [including – but not limited to – Loretta Robison and her children, Crystal (Dustin) Peterson and their son, Rebecca Aldridge, William (Esther) Spicer and their children, Seth (Brittany) Thompson and their children, Tina Carl and her children, Gina Kelly and her son, Krista Hauser, Reannen Reaves, Grace and Ella McPherson, and Ian and Maddie Kyger] along with far too many friends to name, although the family would like to thank the last friend Doris made, Ms. Emily Williams, for her sincere concern, care, and determination in assisting “Ms. Doris” through this last stage of her mortal life. Visitation will be held 10-11 am, Monday, July 30, 2018 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. A memorial service will immediately follow at 11 am with Rev.
Terry Thompson officiating. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date alongside Dorse Pippin in Harvill Cemetery. Memorial gifts are suggested to American Cancer Society in care of Knell Mortuary in honor of a beloved family member’s journey to becoming an official survivor.
