Doris ‘Nean’ Crowder, age 81, of Ernest Crowder Lane in Spruce Pine, died Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospital in Asheville. Born on January 7, 1938 in Avery County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Clay and Myra Gouge Hughes. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brothers; Ted, Earl, Vearl, and Garrett Hughes.

‘Nean’ was a member of the Sullins Branch Baptist Church. She loved her children and all of her family and was particularly close to her sisters. She also loved the Roaring Creek community of Avery County where she grew up.

She was a hard working woman that enjoyed gardening, canning home grown vegetables and cleaning her house. Left to cherish her memories are her husband of nearly sixty-three years; Leonard Crowder of the home; her daughter; Kathy Granholm and husband, Tom of Amelia Island, FL; her son; Mark Crowder of Spruce Pine; her brother; Ralph Hughes and wife, Minnie of Fairview; her sisters; Estelle Wilson of Waxhaw, Myrtle Billings of New Winsor, MD, Helen Burleson and Effie Woodie both of Newland, and Kay Freeman of Spruce Pine; her grandchildren; Nathan Hoover, Amber Hawthorne, Cody Crowder, and Casey Crowder; and her great grandchildren; Emilee and Logan Hoover, Maryn Stiegel, and Lili Hawthorne. The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at the funeral service to honor the life of “Nean’ Crowder on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with David Burleson and Rev.

Jack Jones officiating. A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends will be on Saturday, June 1, 2019 from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in the Gouges Creek Cemetery.
