Dorothy Ann Magelund, 95, formerly of Antigo, died on Monday, May 6, 2019, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King. Her dear nieces Deborah Bent and Shari Orgeman-Breyer were by her side while her son Michael Magelund in Georgia said his goodbye over the phone. She was born on Aug.
3, 1923, to the late Byron and Josephine (Jahnke) Johnston. She graduated from Antigo High School in 1941. On July 6, 1943, she married her high school sweetheart, Myles “Buck” Magelund.
Dorothy and Buck grew up in Antigo but spent many years living in St. Paul, Minn. They spent the latter part of their years in Appleton before moving to King. Mrs. Magelund was a switchboard operator for the telephone company while her husband served in the U.S. Army’s European Theater of World War II during the Battle of Normandy.
She was glad to have her beloved “Bucky” back home safely. Later, she worked for world-class photographer Everett Kroeger in his studio in St. Paul. She was a talented artist who painted beautiful oil portraits along with being a master seamstress who sewed countless christening gowns and crocheted the most stunning quilts, sweaters and doilies.
She was an avid collector of antique dishes, spoons, thimbles and figurines. She enjoyed taking care of and spending time with her family and grandchildren. Survivors include a son and his wife, Michael and Marilyn Magelund, Albany, Ga.
; a daughter, Diane Frantz, Menasha, Wis. ; two sisters, Shirley Sargeant and Mary Ann Kuborn; six grandchildren: Thomas (Tania) Mulvaney, St. Paul; Corinna Magelund Robinson (Brian), Atlanta; Jade Magelund, Sylvester, Ga. ; Chad Magelund, Albany; Kimberly Goff Klockzien, Fremont, Wis.
; Brittany Frantz, Minneapolis; and four great grandchildren: Josh Goff, Wisconsin; Logan and Noah Magelund, Camilla, Ga. ; and Quinn Paces Robinson, Atlanta. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter Kay (Magelund) Mulvaney; and a brother Wayne Johnston.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Friday, June 7, at 11 a.m. at the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King. Dorothy and Myles will be laid to rest together. Chaplain Martha Mafurutu will officiate the ceremony.
