Obituary for Dorothy “Dot” (Schepner) McDonough Age 96, of Crafton Heights, passed peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, August 31, 2018. Loving daughter of the late Edward and Mary Schepner; beloved wife of the late Bill “Raven” McDonough; dear mother of Kathy, Ed (Sylvia), Bill (Diane), Nancy (Paul Heidenreich) and Maureen. Dot was most fulfilled in the company of her six grandchildren, Ashley (Brandon Bogdon), Brittany, Timothy (Ashley), Kelsey (Sean Schreiber), Dana and Troy Heidenreich; and six treasured great-grandchildren, Ashton, Mila, Blake, Jordyn, Camden and Dane.

She was the oldest sister to her siblings, the late Ed Schepner and “Betty Jean” O’Connell, and a valued aunt to their children. Her mother Mary, was the first female driver in Allegheny County, and Dot continued on that trailblazing path. She was active in all sports (when it was still frowned upon), excelled academically, and graduated from Duquesne University in 1944.

She met the love of her life, Bill McDonough through a blind date while he was on leave from the South Pacific as a medic during WW II. Bill suffered traumatic injuries during the war, and after a long recovery, they tied the knot. While raising five children, she went on to earn Bachelor and Masters degrees from Duquesne University in elementary education.

In addition to teaching 3rd grade at St. Philip School, she also had a hand in running husband Bill’s successful insurance agency. Through her efforts in seeking services for her daughter Maureen, she also became a tireless advocate for children with disabilities. Not one to let obstacles get in her way, she encouraged her children to pursue their own dreams and make the world a better place.

She was a die hard Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins fan. Her strength, persistence and fearlessness will be missed by all who knew her. Family and friends received Tuesday 6-8 p.m., Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the SCHEPNER-MCDERMOTT FUNERAL HOME, INC.

, 165 Noble Ave. , Crafton 412-921-3661. Mass of Christian Burial Thursday at 9:30 a.m., in Ascension Worship Site of St. Philip Parish.
