Dorothy E. Cherne, age 91, of Rock, passed away Tuesday morning, May 8, 2018 at Christian Park Healthcare Center in Escanaba. She was born on October 22, 1926 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Joseph and Elaine (Jelen) Tichy. She grew up in Chicago and graduated from Steinmetz High School in 1944.

Dorothy worked at a bank in Chicago until she met the love of her life, Wilbert H. Cherne. The couple wed on November 6, 1946 in Chicago and he preceded her in death on July 12, 2007. Together, they shared 60 years of marriage and raised 3 children.

For many years, Dorothy was employed by IBM as a supervisor for Key Punch Operators until her retirement in 1982. She and Wilbert moved to Rock in July of 1982 where they enjoyed the outdoors and slower pace of life the Upper Peninsula had to offer. Dorothy was a member of the Rock American Legion Auxiliary where she served as president, she volunteered at Girl’s State in Lansing with the American Legion Auxiliary, was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Perkins where she sang in the church choir, and also was a member of TOPS.

In her free time, she enjoyed swimming and reading. Dorothy loved watching her grandchildren grow up and spending time with her family. She also loved tigers, cardinals, German shepherd dogs, and had a special place in her heart for her cat, Buddy.

Dorothy E. Cherne is survived by daughter, Kathleen (John) Stams of Rock; sons, Alan (Dianne) Cherne of Park Ridge, IL, and Michael (Linda) Cherne of Forth Worth, TX; 8 grandchildren, Alex Cherne, Evan Cherne, Athena (Stams) Stroud, Michele (Stams) Proffit, Laura (Stams) Gansberger, Nicholas Stams, Adam Cherne, and Corrine Lineberger; many great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Laverne Bocek of Park Ridge, IL. In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by great-grandson, Shane Stams. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m., to 3:30 p.m., Monday, May 14, 2018 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Gladstone.

Rock American Legion Auxiliary services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4:00 p.m., Monday, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Perkins with Father Ryan Ford officiating. A luncheon will be served afterward in the church fellowship hall.

Burial will take place in the Rock Cemetery. The family requests memorials be directed to the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.
