Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine, with Pastor David Tinker officiating. Burial will follow in the Carmine Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 12 at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Dorothy Geraldine Rothermel was born Dec. 20,1929 in Carmine to Herbert Paul and Clara Minnie (Keng) Noak.

Baptized May 18, 1930, Dorothy was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on February 27, 1944. She attained her elementary education in Carmine area schools, and completed her education at Southwest Texas State, and the University of Houston, where she obtained a B.S. degree in Vocational Home Economics. She also completed graduate work at the University of Houston and Sacred Heart Dominican College in Houston.

Dorothy married Thomas H. Rothermel on December 28, 1947. She was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone from 1947 through the 1950’s as a switchboard operator. Dorothy began her teaching career in the Pearland School District, teaching 6th grade from 1961 through 1963, and then taught at Pasadena High School from 1963 until 1987.

There she served as department chairman for 20 years. Dorothy completed her teaching career as a substitute teacher in the Round Top-Carmine I.S.D. for a number of years. Memberships included the Texas State Teachers Association, Vocational Homemaking Teachers Association of Texas, Texas retired Teachers Association (Life Member), the Washington Co. Genealogical Society, the German-Texas Heritage Society, Brenham Area Retired school Peronnel Association, and the Texas Wendish Heritage Society.

A member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church, Dorothy served as secretary for the church council, and as president of the Ladies Aid, as well as secretary of the general board for the Women of the ELCA. Dorothy was passionate about genealogy, researching her family’s history and making related articles available for publication in various historical publications. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Connie Sue and Marshall Bird of Splendora; Pamela Ann and James A. Guthrie of Pasadena; grandchildren: Rachel Poffinbarger and husband James of Splendora; Johanna Ruth Bird of Houston, and Moriah Guthrie of Pasadena; great-grandchildren: Camille Poffinbarger, Corinne Poffinbarger, and Cristin Poffinbarger; Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Clara Noak, and her husband, Thomas H. Rothermel.

Memorials may be directed to the WELCA unit of Martin Luther Lutheran Church of Carmine, P. O. Box 362, Carmine, TX 78932. Funeral arrangements for Dorothy Geraldine Rothermel are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 West Main, Brenham.
