Verona – Dorothy V. (Jackson) Hyde, 84, devoted wife and mother, was taken unexpectedly from her earthly life Saturday, November 10th at UW Hospital in Madison, WI. She was born at home on October 6th 1934 in Lafayette County, WI to Foster and Gladys Jackson. Dorothy grew up on a farm and was involved in 4H showing her sheep and home sewn clothing.
She graduated from Mineral Point High in 1952 and attended Platteville State College in Platteville, WI. While at college, she met her future husband, Don Hyde. After her graduation, they were married June 2, 1956 at Willow Springs Methodist Church near Mineral Point, WI.
Don and Dorothy enjoyed 62 wonderful years of marriage. Dorothy taught in Beloit, WI, Columbus, GA, Viola, McFarland and Verona, WI. She retired as the Head Librarian / LMC Director from Verona High School.
After retiring from teaching, Dorothy worked at Pleasant Company and the Lands’ End call centers. Dorothy had a passion for reading, theater production, genealogy and her Cornish heritage. While researching her ancestry, she traveled to Cornwall twice where she traced her roots back to the 1500’s.
Finding she was a Mayflower decedent, Dorothy became a member of the Mayflower Society. She enjoyed being involved and attending the Cornish festivals in Mineral Point, WI, where she coordinated and judged the Benson Scholarship, which provided opportunities for students to travel to Cornwall. She was an active member of United Methodist Women where she held many positions, including UMW President.
A wonderful wife, mother, aunt and friend, she was always ready to help anyone who was in need. Dorothy had a way of making an occasion special and tried to remember people on birthdays, holidays, anniversaries or any other celebration. She was well known for her meatloaf that she prepared for family gatherings.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Don; three children, Heather (Elton) Oelke of Norman, OK, Brett (May) Hyde of Muskego, WI, and Kristen Hyde of Madison, WI; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carrie Beth; parents; a sister; and four brothers. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at Sugar River UMC, 415 West Verona Ave.
, Verona. Visitation will be held prior from 1 -3 p.m. at the church. A celebration will follow the service.
