Dorothy was born to Elmer and Ruby (Brenneke) Manson on February 24, 1954 in Pittsburg, Kansas. She was a student at several local universities, the latest of which being Wichita State University.

Dorothy was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America and loved music, playing several stringed instruments as well as the piano and organ. She was also an avid lover of cats.
