After a lengthy illness due to an accidental fall, Dottie went to the Lord on July 9, 2018. She was born August 18, 1939 in Runge, Texas to H.K. and Edna Earl Stockton. She was preceded by her parents, as well as a daughter, Laura Chamberlain.
She grew up in a small farm house between Runge and Charco, Texas, and attended school in Runge. While pursuing her degree at the University of Texas, and being of very modest means, she lived in the Shangri-La co-op, lady’s dormitory. This is where she made many good and close friends that remain as such to this day.
Dottie spent most of her life in San Antonio, where she was active in the residential real estate business. She was with the Guy Chipman Company, Bradfield Properties, Phyllis Browning Company, and had her own company for several years. As a top agent, she assisted many of the Spurs in their real estate acquisitions.
Also, as an avid Spurs backer, for years she had a front row seat to the home games. She even had the privilege of getting squashed by Shaq as he, along with several players, dove into the seats while chasing an errant ball. All you could see was a pile of humanity, with Dottie’s head sticking out.
Dottie was a stunning beauty, feminine, charming, intelligent and outgoing, as well as a loyal and caring friend, a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Yet, all the while, she was a fierce competitor, who never, ever, left any doubt as to where she stood on any issue. One person close to her described her as the true Alfa Female.
She was indeed a very unique person. At the age of 23, she had a radical mastectomy, which, at the time was a very crushing and disfiguring operation. That didn’t slow her down, as her attitude was, “hey, I’ve got a life to live, so let’s get on with it!
! ” Throughout her entire life she had numerous surgeries and procedures, but she never complained. In 2010 she married Doug Riff, and they retired to New Fountain, near Hondo, Texas, where she remained until her passing.
She is survived by her husband, Doug, her daughter, Carol Chamberlain, granddaughters, Laura and Adriana Fernandez, and Doug’s children, John, Susan and Steven. A private family memorial is planned for a later date. To send flowers or a remembrance gift to the family of Dorothy Riff, please visit our Tribute Store.
