Dr. Hampton’s Obituary Obituary June 26, 1927 – January 9, 2019 Hampton Percy Deslonde was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to the union of James Louis Deslonde, Sr. and Victoria (Percy) Deslonde. Hampton attended Xavier College Preparatory High School. After graduating from Xavier Prep he enlisted in the U.S. Army and honorably served his country as a Corporal.
He was active from September 11, 1950 to September 10, 1952. He enrolled at Xavier University where he met the love of his life, Carolene Elizabeth Floyd. They both entered the pharmacy program and graduated together with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1955.
They were joined in marriage on July 23, 1955 and the new couple moved to Houston, TX where Hampton managed three pharmacies. During this time two sons were born, Hampton, Jr. and Keith. In 1958 the family moved to Los Angeles, CA where a third son, Anthony was born.
Hampton went on to attend the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine and received his medical degree in 1965. From 1965 to 1968 he performed his internship and residency at LAC USC Medical Center Unit II in Los Angeles, CA with a specialty in Pediatrics. From 1968 to 1970 Hampton was the Director of the Immunization Project for Los Angeles County.
From 1970 to 1994 he was the District Health Officer at the Dr. Ruth Temple Health Center (formerly Southwest Health Center) in Los Angeles. He retired from this position on July 18, 1994. Although he lived and worked in Los Angeles for many years, Hampton realized his beginning, his culture, his closest friends, his school ties, and the core of his character was deeply connected to New Orleans and Xavier University.
He enjoyed and maintained this connection throughout his life. He loved going back to the “Big Easy” for Mardi Gras. He enjoyed golf, especially winning “skins” from his buddies and hanging out at the 19th hole.
He was well known for behaving like a tight wad, but was actually quite generous. He had an expansive personality and moved easily among kings, commoners and knaves. Military service taught Hampton the values of discipline, consistency, order and respect.
The traditions ingrained in him by the Army were reflected in all that he did. He would always face any problem head on, without reservation, and with an unshakeable belief in his abilities. These traits would serve him well as he was an unstoppable force at a time when segregation was the law of the land.
Hampton valued education and encouraged that in his three sons, all of whom attended college. He taught them not only to understand the importance of education, but to reflect that in their daily lives and attitudes, especially by giving back to the communities they live and work in. Hampton was a firm but fair father and took that responsibility very seriously.
He instilled in each of his children the values that he had learned; responsibility for your own actions, dignity, a strong work ethic, saving, and commitment. He was a proponent of “tough love” before the term was coined. You may not like how he told you, but all he did was out of love.
Together with his loving wife, Carolene, they were a shining example of self sacrifice and always placed the needs of others above self. On January 9, 2019 Hampton peacefully joined his Savior after a brief struggle with heart failure with close family by his side. He died as he had lived, on his own terms and with strength and courage.
Hampton is survived by Sons: Hampton Deslonde, Jr. (Julie), Keith Deslonde (Belinda), Anthony Deslonde; Grandchildren: Janae, Cosette, Brian; Great-Grandchildren: Londyn and Legend; and a host of nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years Carolene Floyd Deslonde, parents James and Victoria (Percy) Deslonde, brothers James Deslonde II, Robert Deslonde, Hiram Deslonde, and sisters Marie Deslonde Marion, Albertine Deslonde Travis and Lois Deslonde Ruth.
