She was the tenth child and the youngest girl born in this large loving Francis family and she was a lifelong resident of Kansas City, Missouri. Eleanor’s parents James and Mossie Lee, three sisters; Betty Jean, Beverly Jacqueline, Emma Maxine and five brothers; Kenneth, James Jr., Earl Sr., Charles Sr., John Francis all which have preceded her in death.

One granddaughter, Angel Marie Guess also preceded her in death in 2011. Eleanor accepted Jesus Christ at a very early age and attended Cain Grant African Methodist Episcopal Church along with her entire family. No one lived in Mossie Francis’ home and did not attend church.

That included her children and grandchildren as well. You would attend Sunday School, church services, sing in the choir, be a junior usher and various other church commitments were expected. Church was an extension of family and family was church.

Eleanor would remain at Cain-Grant A.M.E. until she began attending Palestine Missionary Baptist Church in approx. 2008. Eleanor united in marriage to Gerald LaRon Blount in 1963 and to this union three children were born; Gerri Rhonda, Tynell Anthony and LaRon Wayne Blount.

The young couple worked together to raise their family with Gerald retiring early due to health from the Jackson County Juvenile Justice Center prior to his death in 1994. After high school, Eleanor’s love for fashion lead her to attend Josette’s School of Charm where she would model and create her own fashions and designs. She was a seamstress for years and created many of her own clothes which also included sewing fashions for lots of her family and friends.

Eleanor continued her education in college and completed an associates; from Penn Valley in Liberal Arts and a two year Paralegal program from Rockhurst University with aspirations of working in the field of law. She would also have many jobs throughout her lifetime which included, but not limited to the following: Western Union, Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), Corwin Company, Quincy Research Center, Area Transportation Authority (ATA), and finally Power & Light Company of Kansas City where she would retire after 20+ years of service. Eleanor was educated in the Kansas City Missouri public schools, where she attended Woodland Elementary, Lincoln Jr. and graduating from Manual High School in 1966.

After graduation, as young adults scatter across the world exploring the universe, many people never reconnect with their high school friends. However, that is not the case for many Manual alumnis. Through their desire to reconnect, they formed the Manual Technical High School Alumni Association and therefore have created a loving, caring organization where they plan parties, class reunions, and foster a strong support for each other.

Eleanor was a leader, a visionary, a planner, and a free spirited person who loved her family, her friends, and traveling. She never let any grass grow under her feet. She loved to shop but loved finding a bargain even more, thus she loved the Thrift Stores.

Anyone who really knew her, knows that her love for Thrift Store shopping wasn’t just limited to the Kansas City area, even if she was out of town, she would seek and find a thrift store. Her passion for traveling has taken her to many cities across this country, and many countries outside of this city. She has cruised to Jamaica, Cancun, San Juan, St. Lucia, the Cayman Islands, Belize and many more.

She has visited the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Colosseums of Rome, the beaches of Bermuda, and partied with Tom Joyner on Tom Joyner’s annual cruise. Eleanor has lived a good life, and she has seen many people, places and things. Whatever capacity that you may have known her, no one can deny her infectious spirit, her work ethic, her dedication and commitment to whatever she was involved in.

Someone said that “She was the ‘glue’ that kept us all together”, and no truer words have been spoken. We must now find a way to keep it together in spite of our loss because she would want it this way. Elegant.

Regal. Loyal and loving…That was Eleanor! Heaven has received an ANGEL waiting for her wings!

! ! To God be the glory!
