Eliza Daniel Yow was born to the late George and Emma Daniel on February 23, 1935, and departed life on November 19, 2018. She was a faithful and active member of Thomas Chapel AME Zion Church for over 80 years. She served as Musician for the gospel chorus, Trustee, Deaconess, Class Leader and delegate to the Annual Conference.

She attended Lewis Elementary School and graduated from Parker High School, Class of 1951. She attended Miles University, Tuskegee University and Grady Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, graduating March 1955. She retired with 35 years of service as a Registered Nurse at the VA Hospital, Birmingham, Alabama.

She was a member of the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Club, Grady Memorial School of Nursing Alumni, Parker High School Alumni and the VA Medical Center Retirees. She was a team-mother for 100 – 130 lb. West End Little League football team with her son, Joe and later her grandson’s (Joseph) team, Smithfield Cults.

She was well known at Glen Iris Elementary for volunteering over 10,000 hours and was a substitute teacher for 2nd and 4th grade reading, which lead to her retiring from Birmingham School System. In March 1996, along with her grandson Joseph, traveled to Mobile, Alabama, to the AEA Convention Awards where she was awarded with the title of Runner Up Parent of the Year for the state of Alabama. In 2009, she received a Hidden Hero Award from the Mayor’s office, Division of Youth and Services.

Eliza was preceded in death by her father, George W. Daniel, her mother Emma Daniel and her brother John Daniel. She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband of 47 years: Eugene Yow; two sons: Leroy Drake, Jr. and Joe L. Binder; special nephew: George “Sonny” Daniel; grandson: Joseph M. Binder; two granddaughters: Tameka R. Binder and Jassmine L. Binder; four great-grandchildren: Ta’Kiyah M. Binder, Ah’Niyah D. Jones, Tyler L. Binder, Genesis K. Binder; a host of Cousins, other relatives and friends.
