Obituary of Elizabeth McElroy Elizabeth E. “Betty” McElroy of Stony Point, loving wife, mother, and a descendant of settlers of Wurtsboro, died Monday, June 18, 2018 at the Northern Riverview Health Care Center in Haverstraw. She was 94. The daughter of the late Paul Harry Lewis and Edna Weller Lewis, she was born October 25, 1923 in Chester, PA.

Mrs. McElroy was an avid historian, who, together with her husband, shared a keen interest in genealogy. They were able to trace their family lineage back to the great American Nelson, Lewis, and Washington families. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Stony Point.

In her later years, she attended the Garden Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale, NJ. More than anything, Mrs. McElroy loved her family. She enjoyed camping and road trips with her husband, children, and grandchildren.

She also enjoyed dining out with family and friends. She is survived by a daughter: Judith Hettesheimer of Hudson, NY; son-in-law: James Granito; five grandchildren: Trevor (Won), Tara (Walter), Kristis (Jason), Ryan (Mary Barbara), and Paul (Debra); nine great grandchildren; a brother: Ralph Lewis; a sister: Jean Munroe; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband: Richard N. McElroy; a son: Richard P. McElroy; a daughter: Jane C. Granito; a brother: Harry Paul Lewis & his wife Shirley; another sister-in-law: Jan Lewis; son-in-law: H. Foster Hettesheimer, Jr. and a brother-in-law: Harold Munroe.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday, June 25 from 10:00am to 11:30am at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro, with a prayer service starting at 11:30am. Burial will follow at the Sylvan Cemetery in Wurtsboro. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Garden Presbyterian Church, 326 Hillsdale Avenue, Hillsdale, NJ 07642.
