Elsie M. Cesar, age 88, of the Greenville area, passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 9, 2018 at Mercy Health-St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. The daughter of Alvin & Stella (Scofield) Matthews, she was born on October 15, 1929 in Orleans. She retired from Wolverine World Wide, having worked at the glove plant in Greenville and and shoe factory in Rockford, and was a member of the First Church of God in Greenville, and the ladies auxiliaries of the American Legion and Moose Lodge in Greenville, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Sheridan.

Elsie was an avid reader, enjoyed dancing and trips to the casino. She was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands, Cecil Gillmer, Ronald Haynes, and Max D. Cesar; two brothers, Edward Matthews and Roy Matthews; two sisters, Ivadell Snyder and Barbara Dickinson; a son-in-law, Richard Lampani; a daughter-in-law, Nancy L. Gillmer; a great grandson, Jonathan Lampani; a great granddaughter, Caitlin Hunt; and three step-children. Surviving are her children, Betty Lampani of Grand Rapids, Judy & Dale Wilcox of Gowen, Don Gillmer of South Carolina, and Patsy Raby of Greenville; three step-children; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; a sister, Edna Sawdy of Sheridan; three brothers, Loyal & Jana Matthews of Delaware, Wilbur & Doreen Matthews of Hudsonville, and Jim & Nancy D. Gillmer of Greenville; three sisters-in-law, Nona Andersen of Stanton, Carol Cesar of Langston, and Marcy Cesar of Stanton; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation is on Sunday from 4-6 p.m. and on Monday from 10-11 a.m. at Christiansen Cremation & Funeral Care, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.. m. on Monday.

Pastor Bob Cooper of the Greenville First Church of God will officiate and burial will take place privately at Blythefield Memorial Gardens near Rockford. Envelopes for memorial contributions to the Dolores Halvorsen Memorial Food Pantry will be available at the funeral home.
