Elsie Elaine DeWald of Coal City, Illinois October 1, 1940 – February 20, 2019 Elsie Elaine DeWald, age 79, of Coal City, Illinois, passed away unexpectedly on February 20, 2019. Elsie was born and raised in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. She was a seamstress, a cake decorator and worked as a supervisor in retail in both Washington state and Morris, Illinois.

In more recent years, she was an election judge and loved cooking for the kitchen every Monday night for Bingo at the Coal City Lions Club. Before coming to Coal City, Elsie earned a Certificate of Appreciation from the United States Navy for her unselfish, faithful and devoted service during her husband’s 20 year Naval career. Elsie was a dedicated mother and grandmother first and foremost.

She treasured her children & grandchildren and embraced every moment with them. She always knew how to brighten their day and bring a smile. She loved cooking for her family and loved sharing stories and pictures of her grandkids to anyone and everyone.

She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and she enjoyed playing cards and board games with her family. Elsie was a committed volunteer and loved giving back to the community that she dearly loved; Coal City. She had a big heart and passion for helping others.

She was named “Lion of the Year” for the Coal City Lion’s club in 2013, the 2013 Community Service Recognition from the Sulphur Springs Gleaners, and was selected as Coal City’s Community Service Award Recipient in 2014. She was also honored with being Coal City’s “Woman of the Year” by Prairie State Women’s club in 2015. A favorite event of Elsie’s was the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner, a free meal offering available to the area residents each November.

One of her greatest joys was working with the Daybreak Center in Joliet, a division of Catholic Charities. She always had a smile on her face and a positive attitude in every endeavor. Elsie is survived by her loving and devoted husband of more than 56 years, Irving DeWald; loving daughters; Brenda Collier (Chris) of Coal City, Susan DeWald (Tom Marston) of Taylorsville, KY, and Vicki Kieser of Bloomsburg, PA; five grandchildren, Amy Kolinovsky (Matt) of Bloomsburg, PA, Ryan Collier (Megan) of Palatine, IL, Baylee Collier of Coal City IL, Chloe Marston and Allie Marston of Taylorsville, Kentucky and one great granddaughter, Rosie Kolinovsky of Bloomsburg, PA.

and her sister Shelva Blossom of Orangeville, PA. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Jason Ryman of Philadelphia, PA in 2012. Family and friends are welcome to attend visiting hours on Sunday, February 24th, 2019 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Ferrari Funeral Home at 1044 Ferrari Drive in Coal City IL.

Funeral services will be held at Ferrari Funeral Home on Monday, February 25th, 2019 at 9:00 AM, followed by her interment at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery at 20953 W Hoff Road in Elwood, IL at 11:00 AM.
